The origin of the universe, predating time itself, remains a profound mystery. While the Big Bang explains the universe's expansion, it doesn't address its cause. The Dao Te Ching refers to coexistence and non-existence as the "abyss of abysses - the gateway to all mystery.” The universe can be imagined as shifting between black and white, creating a circular world through the boundaries between these opposites. Ancient Hebrew texts liken stars to traveling angels. As the stars move out of the circles that contain them, the circle expands. Yet, on a sphere, circles can shrink even as angles escape, like the universe may one day fold in on itself, continuing the eternal cycle of being and non-being. Mercer. After receiving a name from its grandmother, a baby is faced with the prospects of knowledge, love, and death in a game of two truths and a lie. Over a 20-year timeline, the baby journeys across the globe, giving away three aspects of itself to three others. During my past year of living in the desert, prolonged isolation got me to ask one question: “Who is the one listening when I am speaking to myself?” Who is the “I” that listens to the words spoken by the inner voice? Who owns the inner eye that delights in the pink elephants of daydreams? Do they share a name with the dreamer, or are they just strangers living in the same skull? Neighbors is a two-channel video installation that grapples with one’s relationship with oneself. Played simultaneously, the animated videos show two characters living in apartments across each other. Crouching in the darkness, they watch and judge each other’s every move. Using the installation as a metaphor, Neighbors delve into the paradoxical structure of one’s inner world. The two-channel installation comprises one screen playing the video normally while the other plays the same clip but in reverse. A zero-sum game describes a situation involving two sides, where one side’s advantage always equates to the other’s loss. In my backyard, I saw an insect curled up to drink a liquid coming from its own wound. Mesmerised, I tried to picture the incident in reverse. In that image, the animal was expelling parts of itself to patch up its wound. Thinking about the city that sat far away on the horizon, I imagined the same thing happening to an organism that we call our civilisation. In virtual spaces, we can move freely on the axis of time, events can be sliced up and reorganised, and actions can be undone and redone. Barely surviving, our destitute star builds a life for himself out of furniture that has washed up on the shore, making an unremarkable patch of beach his home. Jason’s Story is a liminal soap opera exploring the impassable spaces between people, a romance stranded nowhere in particular. They were neither bold nor beautiful, only bound together by a few mysterious objects.
